Print, Broadcast and New Media Editors:
We’d love to share the story of The Imani Project with you! In the vast world of African support and assistance, we’re a tiny 501©3 NGO. Currently, we serve 76 children and their families. The geographic area we serve is within a 20-kilometer radius of the tiny village of Misufini in Kilifi County, Kenya, where, as in many rural areas in Africa, malnutrition and the lack of medical care is commonplace. While in the early 2000’s, Kenya mandated public education for years 1 through 8 – there are fees for attendance, uniforms and boarding. The school year fees may be a mere $20 , books and supplies another $10-20 and uniforms an additional $10. It may sound like the cost of an evening meal to us, but in rural Kenya, that could be one to two months food budget for a family of four. Each child’s US sponsor pays $35 a month and that covers school fees, uniforms and supplies plus a bimonthly food allotment of 90Kg of maize – the Kenyan staple, dried fish, dried beans, vegetable seeds to plant along with a planting tool or mixing bowl. As for uniforms, The Imani Project pays local women to measure each child and sew their uniforms thus keeping sponsor dollars local. Many Imani Project supporters have sponsored children for years, with some sponsoring several children in need. We’ll be happy to provide photos and and arrange interview contacts with the Imani Project volunteer board members.
